N.J. high school student struck by car after stepping off school bus

An 18-year-old high school student in Ocean County was hospitalized Wednesday with injuries from being struck by a car after stepping off a school bus, authorities said.

The teen got off the bus about 10 p.m. at the intersection of Madison Avenue and Courtney Road in Lakewood when he was struck, according to police.

Police said the bus was traveling south on Madison Avenue when the driver activated his flashing red lights, according to Lakewood Police Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith.

“After coming to a stop at the northwest corner of Courtney Road, the student exited the bus and began crossing over toward the northbound lane,” Staffordsmith said in an email.

As the teen walked past the bus, he was struck by a car headed south in the passing lane of Madison Avenue, Staffordsmith said.

The student, who suffered a head injury that was not considered life-threatening, was taken to an area trauma center for treatment and evaluation, Staffordsmith said.

An officer determined the driver of the car, a 24-year-old man from Howell, failed to observe the flashing lights. He was given several motor vehicle summonses, Staffordsmith said.
